  • What is AFO/CAFO?

AFO/CAFO is an acronym for Animal Feeding Operation/Confined Animal Feeding Operation.

An AFO is any operation that confines animals in a non-vegetated area for 45 days or more in any 12 month period.  This is just a designation and has no benefits or detriments.

A CAFO is any AFO where manure or wastewater can come into contact with "Waters of the State".  This includes surface and ground water sources.

  • Do these regulations affect me?

A Risk Assessment Tool has been created for landowners/operators to evaluate their risk of being an AFO or CAFO.  The tool can either be done on your own or with the Whidbey Island Conservation District Farm Planner, Carol Osterman.

Click Here to go to the Risk Assessment Tool or contact us at (360) 678-4708.
