                      Fair University 2008 - Full class list

 

Fair University is a three-day series of classes geared toward enhancing Islanders’ skills.  On Friday, the focus is on domestic arts, Saturday’s schedule is all about farms and gardens, while Sunday’s features sustainable living tips and local chefs using local foods.  There are nine 45-minute classes each day … and the best part?  No tests.  No essays.  Just local folks sharing their hard-earned knowledge with their neighbors.

                      SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 - Farm & Garden Day

                  Conservation District on how to make a rain garden flourish in areas of excess                   water.

                 

                  SUNDAY, AUGUST 17 - Local Chefs/Local Foods & Sustainable Living

               2-2:45, Antique Barn - Rain Barrels, Cisterns and More -- Staff from the                Whidbey Island Conservation District on how to collect and use our abundant                rainwater.

               4-4:45, Antique Barn - Natural Yard Care -- Get a better lawn by putting nature                to work! Tips on healthy soils, plant placement, water conservation and                  alternatives to pesticides and fertilizers from Conservation District staff.

 

Aug. 26          Bike, Bus or Biofuel?
                     
Panel discussion: Island Transit, Arnie Peterschmidt, Oak Harbor City Engineer
                      and cyclist, Eph Robbins, Biofuel maker, Al Nejmeh, with truck that runs on 100%
                      used cooking oil.

SEPTEMBER

 

Sept. 20        The Game of Logging: Small-scale Yarding Course - This training program is
                      for woodland owners and workers who want to extract trees from their property
                      safely and without the use of expensive professional logging equipment.  With the
                      use of an ATV, small tractor, arch, or something that can pull a tree behind, the
                      wood can be pulled out in a low impact manner, with little or no residual damage to
                      the property.

OCTOBER

Oct. 6            Forestland Security Workshop - We will have forest security experts from the
                      Washington Department of Agriculture and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office
                      speaking about how to address and prevent security issues such as illegal dumping,
                      meth labs, timber theft, trespass, and other issues of concern.

Oct. 20          Fire Workshop - We will have fire experts from the US Forest Service and the
                      WA Department of Natural Resources speaking about fire ecology and how you
                      can protect your home and your forest from wildland fire.

Both workshops listed above will be held at the Snohomish County Extension Building in Everett. The workshops will be open to everyone and you can register for one workshop or get a discounted rate by registering for both.
