As more people move into
the rural areas of Whidbey Island they are putting there homes into
areas of dense vegetation.
All

rainfall amounts and wind.
There are ways to reduce
the risk of a home or other structures from going up in flames from
a wildfire. Many of them are easy and inexpensive.

Create a 30-foot zone around the house with minimal
vegetation.
-
Provide a minimum of 6-8 feet of clearance from the roof to
any tree limbs.
-
Plant fire resistant plants. See the
WICD Plant Sale Page
for characteristics of Firewise Plants.
-
Select building products that are ignition-resistant.
-
Build away from slopes
-
Provide safe and easy access for emergency vehicles.
