Island
County is the second smallest county in Washington State, yet it has
the second fastest growth rate in the state. Increasing development
in Island County has direct impact on natural resources. Both local
and regional water resource plans identify low impact development
(LID) as a high priority. Therefore, an immediate need exists to
protect natural resources given growth projections and development
pressures.
WICD
had the unique opportunity to work with the City of Langley (see
story linked below), which has revealed that there is high interest
and commitment from island residents to implement LID practices.
However, it is apparent that the interest of island residents is
outpacing the ability to implement these practices on the ground.
Further education to developers, contractors, engineers, landscapers
and homeowners as well as obtaining local project materials will be
necessary to take the lessons learned and implement practices on an
Island wide and even regional basis. WICD coordinates monthly
meetings with LID partners on Whidbey along with key participation
from DOE and The Puget Sound Partnership to continue to advance our
collaborative LID efforts.
