Working Toward Better Ground

WICD's mission is to inspire voluntary conservation on Whidbey Island, through free resources, education, site visits, grants, cost shares, and more.

However, even though we are an island, we are connected with all those who share the waters surrounding us. There are 12 conservation districts with borders on the Puget Sound: Clallam, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston, Whatcom, Whidbey Island, and San Juan Islands. Together they are the Puget Sound District Caucus (PSDC). Because the causes we all are working on affect each other, and because we're stronger together, the PSDC created a project uniting the districts under the banner of Better Ground.

Better Ground is a broad-based communication and education campaign spanning all 12 districts to increase conservation outcomes in our region, and to enroll more citizens in conservation efforts. It's about taking small stewardship actions at home and in our communities to conserve land, water, forests, wildlife, and related natural resources. And it's about seeing how those small actions, put together across our region, can make a big impact.

Conservation districts are one of America’s best-kept secrets; they are local units of government that provide free-to-the-public natural resource management programs that make a real difference. By combining forces across Puget Sound, we hope to get our secret out - that we’re here to help you achieve your better ground goals, so that we can all live in harmony with the land and sea for generations to come.
