2016-17 Green Marsh Restoration Issues Assessment (Phase 1*)

*This project phase was completed in November 2017 and provided substantial information for subsequent phases.  See below to review the Phase 1 purpose and products.  For information regarding the most recent project activity please see the Greenbank Marsh Project Overview page.

Objective

To facilitate an informed decision by Greenbank Beach & Boat Club membership to help resolve stormwater drainage issues on their community property.

Background

In 2016, WICD was awarded a grant from the WA State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) to perform the “Greenbank Marsh Restoration Issues Assessment” project focused on the following five components:
  1. Hire legal counsel to clarify the legal rights, liabilities, and obligations of all parties who currently use the stormwater infrastructure on GBBC’s property.
  2. Work with a consulting engineering firm to produce a thorough hydrologic inventory and assessment of the watershed.
  3. Conduct an outreach program to gain input on the interests of the various stakeholders who rely upon the stormwater infrastructure.
  4. Conduct various baseline studies of site characteristics, including tidal datum, characterizing sediment transport dynamics along the beach, characterizing basic hydrogeology conditions, and performing wetland and cultural resource surveys.
  5. Carry out additional conceptual-level engineering design tasks to update the 2013 preliminary engineering feasibility study. Conceptual design options will address and incorporate the results of the previous four project elements.

Phase 1 Conclusion & Next Steps

In early 2017, GBBC membership selected an "open channel" design as the preferred alternative to address drainage issues.  Following a June 2017 community meeting, representatives from GBBC, WICD, and neighboring property owners formed the Greenbank Marsh Working Group to provide a forum for stakeholders to be involved in the design and planning process of GBBC's restoration project.  Click HERE to access the Greenbank Marsh Working Group's webpage.

The Issues Assessment phase of this project was successfully completed in November 2017 and the second phase, Restoration Design, started in January 2018.  Click HERE to access the Phase II - Restoration Design webpage.
